Dear Diary,
Following on from what I've been doing every single day for the past few months or so (i.e: sweet fuck-all) - today I have done nothing more exciting than watch The X Factor Semi-Final and..... well, do a blog.
Gosh, what an emotional semi final. As much as I keep thinking Eoghan should have left, (I just don't think he was as powerful as some of the others) he was AMAZING tonight - even though I don't normally like "Year 3000." And was there any sweeter irony than this little 16 year-old slip of a lad singing about someone else being "only a child" in "Does your mother know"? Not to mention him acting like a total player with all these backing dancers every week - that is exactly why I love him. It's early Michael Jackson all over again - someone so little and young singing about all these adult things like love and heartbreak - never fails. And his reaction to Diana had me in a big sobbing mess - even when I watched the Results again today. He was too distraught to even SPEAK to Dermot after...... and if that, plus his sprinting across the stage before Diana even finished her song didn't bring at least ONE tear out in someone, they must be clinically dead.
Alexandra was fantastic as always - and not just because "Don't stop the music" is one of my faves. Apart from the hilarious moment when she got wapped in the face by a backing dancer's hair, it was a flawless performance. The girl can sing, dance, and is a proper diva - no chance she wouldn't be in the final. Although I have to admit - I found her little "Always follow your dreams" message dedicated to everyone in the world to be the cringiest thing on TV. No need for it. That theme runs through every single Reality TV show in existence, not to mention the fact that every single act mentions it at least 3 times in the little pre-performance mini-film with the ever-present tears in their eyes. WE. GET. IT.
JLS - I fucking love these guys. Like I said, not only can they harmonise like MOTHERS but are good-looking and lovely with it. Plus, you get the impression that they're all proper good mates - which is wonderful when it shows (Ant and Dec = prime example). Yes, there is nothing worse than Louis' constant blathering, not to mention that stomach-clenchingly embarrassing Obama quote, and I hate to see him all smug about getting to the final - BUT THEY DESERVE IT. And while I normally depise "Umbrella" (well, it's been done to death), they absolutely nailed it. Never heard of their second song "I'm always there" but it brought tears to my peepers nontheless. Good on them. According to Shaun, one of them used to be a model who was in a Wii advert that never got used. Guess what? It's all OVER the airwaves now. Tsk, marketing, eh?
As for Diana - what can I say? At first I only looked out for her because she's the sister of someone I worked with a few years ago, but I actually like her. OK, I enjoy her performances more with my eyes closed, to avoid seeing her never wearing shoes when she sang (what IS that?!), and how she always looks like she's either snarling or apologising for herself, but when she sings, SHE SINGS. Plus, she sounds like a cross between Shakira and The Cranberries, and if that's not a good mix, I don't know what is. Easy to spot the family resemblance, too. Her performances tonight were awesome, especially hearing her voice break when she sang the line "...and hold my tongue" during "White Flag." And like I said, the reaction her shock exit caused - plus the sight of Cheryl Cole's lovely face contorted with grief - was enough to have me wailing for ages. Definately will be buying her album.
SWANSONG: MY TOP 3 DIANA PERFORMANCES
1) SMILE - Not enough that this song was written by CHARLIE CHAPLIN and has the most lovely message ever, but she was wearing a Swarovski-covered dress, accompanied by a Big Band, and looked like she was sitting on a swing in Heaven. Add to that the fact that her voice was heartbreakingly lovely, and you have the Perfect 10. Will remain in my Ipod 'till the end of time.
2) PATIENCE - Absolutely outstanding version of one of my favourite Take That songs. Every time I hear her hit that top note, my skin prickles. Not to mention her hair and outfit were the best they've ever been.
3) CALL ME - Had only heard the original song a few times, but her version was electric. Yes, there are moments when she looks slightly scary, and DAMN her legs are skinny. But roller skating dancers, 80's hairdo, and personalised jumper, what's not to like? Had trouble getting this song out of my head for WEEKS.
