Dear Diary,
3 THINGS I'VE DISCOVERED IN THE LAST FORTNIGHT THAT MADE ME WONDER WHY IN THE HELL THEY HADN'T BEEN IN MY LIFE BEFORE NOW:
"He's just not that into you"
Pink Floyd
"Yes Man"
The first, I'm sure you recognize from the previous entry. Had a quite mundane shift last night, but I didn't once crack my neck round every time the door opened, nor did I even ask after Oli when one of his mates from last week walked in. Because I DON'T CARE where he is. He could've crawled to Canada on his tongue and undergone a gay marriage to his dentist's nephew for all I care. God bless that marvellous tome.
The second, you may remember from previous entries. All I can wonder in my spare time (or should that be "Time," since it's all spare nowadays, really) is how on God's green earth I have avoided listening to this band for so long. They are OUTSTANDING!! As with probably most people my age, all I was familiar with was the song "Another brick in the wall" - and that's only because it was used in a play I took part in 4 years ago and recently got remixed into a Dance tune. A while ago, I saw a documentary about the live "The Wall" tour in which Pink Floyd, whilst playing live on stage, gradually got sealed off from the audience, brick by brick. BY A WALL. An actual, literal, WALL. Now, to a pretentious bastard like myself, this much conceptualism (if that is even a word) appealed greatly to me, and after seeing the eponymous film starring Bob Geldof a few weeks ago, decided to see what the fuss was about. And DAAAAAYMN, I'm glad I did.
"The Division Bell" was indeed stunning, but "Dark Side of the Moon"? Utter. Brilliance. It's the most wonderful album, so goddamned crazy and captivating and conceptual and glorious - something you could put on to drift off to sleep to, or listen to as you stride wistfully down a lane somewhere. Am having extreme trouble getting "Breathe in the air" out of my head at the moment - quite difficult as it's hard to just sing lilting melodies and one line, which it mostly seems to consist of. Looked it up the other day (because I really am an incurable geek) and discovered 2 strange things:
1) Australians voted it somewhere in the Top 10 (can't remember) of Albums to Make Love to. Are they CRAAAAAAAAAAZY?! Is that because it produces a pleasant background ambience? Or are you supposed to judge it by how long and which track number you are supposed to "finish" by?! Yes, the album is spectacular, but I personally wouldn't want to be approaching the point of no return and hearing 5 clanging alarm bells going off, or the jarring sound of tills springing open and money being jingled.
2) Apparently in the 70's there was this huge phenomenon when somebody (and I cannot POSSIBLY conceive how they found this out) discovered that if you play the album alongside "The Wizard of Oz" - there are way too many inexplicable coincidences. This was called "Dark Side of the Rainbow" and while I had a nosy on YouTube and couldn't really find THAT much to be amazed by in the first 20 minutes, the idea still fascinates me. Maybe one afternoon, when I've got nothing to do.........
Have bought "The Wall" but haven't actually had time to listen to it yet (how? HOW??! I do FUCK-ALL!!) but it's going on my Ipod as soon as physically possible....
Anyway, as I was saying: last but not least - "Yes Man." Auntie brought me some PJ's and this book the other day, and OH MY GOD. Why have I never read this?! As those of you familiar with either the book or the new Jim Carrey film will tell you, it's about a man who simply decides to stop being so negative one day, and just answers "Yes" to EVERY oppurtunity. How cool is THAT???! Started reading it this afternoon, and have just been simply engrossed. No chance of finishing it before work, but my god, the seed has been planted in my mind and has grown into a full-blown lawn with sprinklers and a fountain shaped like Danny Wallace. I NEED TO SAY YES MORE!!! I am EXACTLY the kind of person who plays it safe all the time, stays boring and remains stuck in a rut while those around me study amazing subjects, travel the world and have boyfriends and fun ALL THE TIME!! Just think, if I say Yes more, how many chances are going to open up for me? OK, it was slightly easier for him, as he had a proper adult job and therefore money to do all these crazy things and travel to Amsterdam, etc..... but the principle is there!
Oh my dear sweet lord on a bike - I'm so excited. This could be the first day of the rest of my life! Well, not that exactly, because OBVIOUSLY it's the first day of the rest of my life, but.... you know what I mean! Even if I do sound like a massive cult-head.
Have already arranged to meet Lisa for shopping tomorrow, and go out with Marie tomorrow night. See, how much fun saying Yes is! OK, so I'd have done those things anyway, but still!
Am quite pissed off that I agreed to work tonight especially since it's with Sam as well, grrrrrr..... She was in as a punter last night, I've already used up all my carefully planned conversational points with her - what the HELL am I going to talk to her about tonight?! Hmmmm.... anyway, must forget it, stay relaxed and say Yes to EVERYTHING!! Unless the usual pervs ask me to come hoover their flat in a maid's outfit again, in which case I'm fucked. I suppose you're allowed SOME limits..... Ooh, what if Oli appears and asks me out? In which case, I wouldn't know WHICH book's philosophy to follow. Maybe should cross that bridge when I come to it.
